Stanford University opened its new 167,000-gsf Computing and Data Science building in January of 2025 in Palo Alto, Calif. Designed by LMN Architects to drive interdisciplinary research and innovation, the facility houses the Stanford Data Science and Impact Labs initiatives, as well as undergraduate programs in computer science and symbolic systems. The five-story structure offers a flexible framework of permanent offices, rotating research team areas, and collaboration environments to allow programs to adapt and evolve over time.

Interconnected open spaces and research office neighborhoods are arranged around a central hub with conference rooms, flexible meeting venues, and everyday amenities to promote interaction between departments across and between floors. Illuminated by natural light, the complex provides a 200-person event space, classrooms, administrative offices, study spaces, and a coffee bar.

Building Information Modeling (BIM), prefabrication, and virtual design and construction technologies were employed in the delivery of the project, which is sited at the intersection of Stanford’s original campus and the developing Science Quad. Whiting-Turner began work on the facility in winter 2022 and California Drywall performed interior construction services.
