Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is constructing a 513,000-sf addition to its existing hospital on the Marquam Hill campus in Portland. Designed by NBBJ to enhance the patient experience, the 14-story tower will offer 128 new inpatient beds to meet a pressing need for healthcare capacity in Oregon since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Inpatient Addition (IPA) will predominantly provide surgical oncology and cellular therapy services, and will connect to the main hospital and the Kohler Pavilion via three sky bridges. With the ability to house 64 additional beds when needed, the structure will include four floors of shell space to support future growth. The project’s total cost of $650 million includes $300 million of budgeted capital investment and $350 million in financing.
With extensive glazing to admit natural light, the facility will feature interior windows directed toward Mount Hood, an elevated roof garden, and a pedestrian path through a multi-sensory garden outside the building. A multimodal transit hub with two bus stops and extensive bicycle parking will ensure accessibility and encourage active travel.
Skanska USA is acting as general contractor, with Stantec as MEP engineer, KPFF as civil engineer, MKA as structural engineer, and Mayer/Reed as landscape architect. Construction began in January of 2022 and occupancy is anticipated in April of 2026.
The development is part of OHSU’s strategic Hospital Expansion Project, which is expected to add 183,000 sf to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in the next phase. Designed by ZGF Architects with Andersen Construction as general contractor, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit would gain 18 new beds, as well as 11 beds for adults with high-risk pregnancies. Additionally, the Kohler Pavilion would accommodate 30 new neurology beds and 18 beds for cardiac care.
