The U.S. Department of Energy dedicated the $75 million Grid Storage Launchpad in August of 2024 at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. Accelerating the development of novel decarbonization solutions, the 85,000-sf facility provides 30 energy research labs, multiple conference rooms, and open office areas with flexible workstations for 100 staff members.

The robust structure features specialized environments for the validation and testing of basic materials, components, and prototype devices under realistic operating conditions. A visualization suite with multimedia displays allows scientists to analyze the role of energy storage in future grid scenarios and create new performance requirements. New approaches can be tested at scale, generating data that supports the work of the Energy Sciences Center and the Electricity Infrastructure Operations Center nearby.

The Grid Storage Launchpad was delivered by the design-build team of Kirksey Architecture, Arup, and Harvey-Cleary Builders. Construction began on the sustainable development in April of 2022.
