Mount Sinai Opens Center for Artificial Intelligence and Human Health

Published 12/20/2024

Mount Sinai Health System opened the $100 million Hamilton and Amabel James Center for Artificial Intelligence and Human Health in November of 2024 in New York. Designed by HOK, the project involved the transformation of a former nursing residence into a 65,000-sf research hub for computational discovery. The 12-story structure will initially house approximately 40 principal investigators, alongside 250 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, computer scientists, and staff.

With eight floors dedicated to Mount Sinai's AI initiatives, the interdisciplinary building accommodates several core facilities, including centers for genomics, personalized medicine, and biomedical engineering. Interspersing collaborative zones with areas for quiet focus, each level has a mix of dry labs, open workstations, private offices, and meeting rooms. On the top floor, an inviting amenity space features a divisible conference room and a pantry.

This groundbreaking development positions Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine to drive the transformation of healthcare through the development of proprietary AI technologies. The health system aims to create an "intelligent fabric" that will support and optimize operations across its 12 hospital campuses.

Lendlease was the general contractor for the project, which incorporated a triple-glazed curtainwall manufactured by APA Facade Systems and installed by Related Services. This enhanced the building's exterior appearance and significantly reduced noise pollution, while still transmitting ample natural light to interior settings.
