The University of Arizona opened the $99 million Grand Challenges Research Building (GCRB) in October of 2024 in Tucson. Designed by ZGF Architects and BWS Architects, the 115,000-sf facility offers flexible labs for programs in optics, quantum computing, advanced communications, and biomedicine. With instructional venues, study areas, and meeting rooms strategically located on the ground floor, the seven-story project features robust maker spaces and advanced instrumentation suites to drive interdisciplinary discovery.
On the top three levels of the GCRB, collaborative environments will support campus-wide programs for the Center for Quantum Networks, the New Frontiers of Sound Science and Technology Center, the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics, and the Space4 Center. The James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences occupies three floors of dedicated lab and office space in the building, which also expands the capabilities of the Office of Research, Innovation and Impact.
Kitchell served as construction manager for the development, which is physically linked to the existing Meinel Optical Sciences Building. Ground was broken in September of 2021.
