Carilion Clinic broke ground in late October of 2024 on the Taubman Cancer Center in Roanoke, Va. Designed by HDR, the $100 million facility will embody a fundamental shift in the delivery of oncology services. The six-story, 257,000-sf building will accommodate the needs of an increasing number of patients, who will benefit from direct access to precision medicine, sophisticated clinical trials, and leading-edge instrumentation. Enabling Carilion to offer expanded treatment options, the flexible development will integrate robust infrastructure that can adapt as healthcare models evolve over time.

In this vibrant care neighborhood, multiple disciplines will collaborate to optimize health outcomes, complemented by new support services ranging from nurse navigators to oncology social workers. Blue Ridge Cancer Care will also occupy space in the building. The translational facility is being constructed on Virginia Tech's Health Sciences and Technology Campus, where the Carilion School of Medicine is located.

Balzer and Associates is acting as civil engineer and surveyor for the transformative project, which is expected to open in 2027.
