The University of Virginia is building the $67.1 million Contemplative Commons in Charlottesville. Integrating academic, research, and social functions, the 57,000-sf facility will feature flexible learning studios that can be configured for group instruction, quiet reflection, physical activity, or informal interaction. During the day, the three-story structure will accommodate classes for the entire university community, while acting as an event venue and gathering hub on evenings and weekends. Housing the Center for Contemplative Sciences, the biophilic structure will open onto a scenic pond and a variety of immersive outdoor settings. A pedestrian bridge and a living garden pathway will enhance both physical and psychological connections for students traveling from their dorms to the center of campus.

The project team includes architect and engineer Aidlin Darling Design, architect of record VMDO, space programmer Brightspot Strategy, structural engineer Fox & Associates, and MEP engineer Affiliated Engineers (AEI). Hourigan Construction began work on the facility in October of 2021 and occupancy is expected in 2023.
