Rice University is planning to construct the $25 million Susan and Fayez Sarofim Hall in Houston. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the 50,000-sf facility will provide the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts with studios, labs, shops, collaboration spaces, exhibition areas, and faculty offices. Promoting experimentation and collaboration between disciplines, the public-facing project will be bisected by a glass-lined pedestrian street that will act as a new campus entrance. The steel frame of the structure will be separate from the building's skin for optimal flexibility and adaptability. The project team includes executive architect Jackson & Ryan, civil engineer Walter P Moore, MEP engineer Wylie Associates, and structural engineer Martinez Moore. Groundbreaking is expected in mid-2022 with occupancy slated for fall of 2023.
