Eastern Washington University opened the $67 million Interdisciplinary Science Center in Cheney in October of 2021. Designed by LMN Architects with Research Facilities Design as laboratory design consultant, the four-story, 102,000-sf facility features vibrant social spaces supporting a variety of teaching laboratories that put science on display. Accommodating programs in physics, chemistry, biology, and geology, the student-centered building offers sophisticated classrooms, lecture halls, offices, collaboration spaces, and study areas. The interactive structure functions as a teaching tool with educational displays and technical exhibits integrated into the walls of the central corridors.
Illuminated by abundant natural light, the sustainably designed facility has achieved LEED Gold certification by incorporating low-flow fume hoods, heat recovery technologies, rainwater harvesting, and xeriscaping. Two enclosed pedestrian bridges connect the center to the university’s existing science building to create a dynamic ecosystem for learning and discovery. Coughlin Porter Lundeen provided civil and structural engineering services with MW Consulting Engineers as lighting designer and MEP engineer. General contractor Lydig Construction broke ground on the facility in June of 2018.
