HITT Contracting opened the Co|Lab smart building research hub in June of 2019 in Falls Church, Va. Designed by William McDonough + Partners, Co|Lab is a collaborative facility for the study and testing of emerging materials, approaches, and technologies for the construction industry. The 8,600-sf project, which has attained LEED v4 Platinum certification, incorporates a Glu-lam and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) structure, as well as a roof canopy solar array that is designed to provide 118 percent of anticipated energy use. The International Living Future Institute's Petal Certification will also be sought for the facility, which features 100 percent LED lighting, an ultra-efficient MEP system, a high-performance façade, and extensive daylighting strategies. Meeting McDonough’s Design for the Circular Economy™ tenets through design for disassembly and next use, the facility includes 13 Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products, 27 DECLARE products, 35 products with Environmental Product Declarations, and 25 products with Health Product Declarations. Engineering consultants for the project included Staengl Engineering and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger.
