The University of Toronto opened the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship in September of 2018. Designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the CAD$200 million project features a four-story atrium, TEAL classrooms for technology-enhanced active learning, design studios, fabrication and prototyping facilities, and a 468-seat auditorium. Standing eight stories above grade with one subterranean level and a mechanical penthouse, the 160,000-sf building houses the Institute for Multidisciplinary Design and Innovation; the Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics; the Centre for Global Engineering; the Troost Institute for Leadership in Education in Engineering; the Institute for Sustainable Energy; and the Institute for Water Innovation. The collaborative facility also includes a visualization lab, an entrepreneurship incubator, and space for undergraduate student clubs. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the building, which features passive solar shading, rainwater harvesting, a rooftop photovoltaic array, and a sophisticated HVAC system with isolation technologies to mitigate the transfer of noise and vibration. General contractor Bird Construction broke ground on the facility in June of 2015 with substantial completion in May of 2018.
