The National Institutes of Health will receive a federal funding increase of $2 billion from a bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in December of 2015. Representing the largest funding increase in over a decade, the legislation will establish the NIH's annual budget at $32 billion. The award is part of $1.1 trillion in federal funding that will also provide $350 million for Alzheimer’s research, $303 million for the study of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, $200 million for the Precision Medicine Initiative, and $85 million for the BRAIN Initiative. The annual budget for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will rise from $7 billion to $7.2 billion, and the National Science Foundation's budget will increase from $7.3 billion to $7.5 billion.
