The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) officially broke ground on a 45,000-sf genomics research facility on September 20, 2011. Located on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif., the carbon-neutral project will provide highly adaptable wet lab and computational lab space for 125 scientists and staff. The $35 million facility is being built by McCarthy Building Companies. Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects, the net-zero energy building will consist of a 12,605-sf laboratory wing; a three-story, 28,600-sf office wing; a 3,560-sf loading dock area; and a 44,040-sf parking structure. KPFF Consulting Engineers is the structural and civil engineer, Integrated Design Associates is the electrical engineer, and Integral Group is the mechanical and plumbing engineer. Atelier Ten is the sustainable design consultant, Jacobs Consultancy is the laboratory planner, Andropogon Associates is the landscape architect, and Natural Systems is the environmental designer. David Nelson & Associates is the lighting design consultant and Davis Langdon is the cost estimator. Construction is targeted for completion in June 2013, with a tenant move-in date of September 2013.
