Scripps Health Breaks Ground on Cardiovascular Institute

Published 5/13/2011

Scripps Health broke ground in May of 2011 on the $456 million Scripps Cardiovascular Institute in La Jolla, Calif. The 383,000-sf, eight-story hospital will provide 108 private patient rooms, 60 ICU beds, six surgical suites, catheterization labs, and cardiovascular research labs. The project team includes design architect HOK, general contractor McCarthy Building Companies, construction manager Jacobs Engineering Group, structural and civil engineer KPFF, mechanical engineer X-NTH, and landscape architect MWPA.

The sustainably designed facility will incorporate abundant natural light and advanced building systems. An adjacent 26,000-sf Central Energy Plant will also be constructed. Completion is expected in January of 2015. The Institute is part of a $2 billion master plan to rebuild Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. The existing hospital will be replaced by three new towers, research and graduate medical education facilities, two medical office buildings, and an outpatient pavilion.
