Fraunhofer will invest $20 million to create the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems in Boston. The renovated six-story, 50,000-sf facility will provide a living laboratory for the development of advanced building systems and materials. The center is being designed by DiMella Shaffer with Gilbane Building Company as construction manager and BR+A as engineer. Construction will begin in July of 2012 with completion expected by year-end 2012. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which will include administrative space and advanced research labs. Fraunhofer is a subsidiary of German research organization Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
