OTTAWA, ONTARIO
Algonquin College opened the $79 million Centre for Construction Excellence in Ottawa in November of 2011. Designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects in collaboration with Edward J. Cuhaci and Associates, the 190,000-sf facility provides classrooms, studios, laboratories, and shops. The project is designed to function as a teaching laboratory for sustainable construction and comprises a five-story tower and a two-story wing. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility, which includes a photovoltaic water heating system, rainwater harvesting, and a five-story biowall made of living plants in the atrium. Ground was broken on the project in October of 2009.
