Published 9/12/2010

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) broke ground in August of 2010 on the 27,000-sf Laboratory for Ocean Sensors and Observing Systems in Woods Hole, Mass. The facility was designed by Ellenzweig Architecture with Columbia Construction as construction manager. The project team includes Bard, Rao + Athanas Consulting Engineers (BR+A), MEP/FP; Stephen Stimson Associates, landscape architecture; Acentech, acoustical engineering; Holmes and McGrath, civil engineering; and LeMessurier Consultants, structural engineering. Funded by $8.1 million in federal stimulus funding, the $10 million facility will provide laboratory and office space for the NSF-sponsored Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO), the Ocean Bottom Seismometer Instrument Pool (OBSIP), and the Environmental Sample Processor Lab (ESP). Construction will begin in March of 2011 with occupancy slated for June of 2012.
