President Barack Obama issued an executive order in July of 2010 requiring federal agencies to institute changes in the current implementation of the Select Agent Program and Regulations. The order directs federal agencies to take actions to improve the overall coordination, consolidation, and oversight of select agents and toxins (SAT). The order also provides for tiering and potential reduction of the select agent list; revision of select agent regulations, rules, and guidance; creation of a federal experts security advisory panel for the Select Agent Program; coordination of federal oversight for SAT security; and rescission or revision of policies and practices for SAT security.Read Optimizing the Security of Biological Select Agents and Toxins in the United States.
