The National Center for Atmospheric Research broke ground on the $70 million NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center in Cheyenne on June 15, 2010. The 153,000-sf project will be constructed by Saunders Construction of Denver. Supporting advanced climate modeling, the facility will support research in weather, oceanography, air pollution, space weather, computational science, energy production, and carbon sequestration. The computer will include more than 100,000 processors in a 24,000-sf area with a sub-floor ten feet deep to accommodate infrastructure and cooling needs. Occupancy is expected in spring of 2012. The center represents a partnership of NCAR, the National Science Foundation, the University of Wyoming, the state of Wyoming, Cheyenne LEADS, the Wyoming Business Council, and Cheyenne Light, Fuel and Power. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
