University of Wisconsin-Madison Develops Research Facilities

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s $160 million Interdisciplinary Research Complex is slated for completion by fall of 2008. Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, the 473,000-sf facility will centralize and expand genetics, cellular, and virology research and will include pilot-scale fermentation capabilities. The project contractor is Oscar J. Boldt Construction of Madison. Construction will begin in fall of 2008 on a $117 million, eight-story biochemistry complex; the project includes renovation of the existing biochemistry building. The $150 million, 300,000-sf Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and the Morgridge Institute for Research, an interdisciplinary public-private facility, is slated for completion in late 2010. Other projects include:

  • The $57 million University Square wing, housing administration and student services, will open in January of 2009.
  • The $40 million Grainger Hall business school addition will open in September of 2008.
  • The $33.4 million Education Building expansion and renovation will commence in September of 2008 and reach completion in September of 2010.
  • The $17.5 million renovation of Sterling Hall will begin in fall of 2008 and reach completion in April of 2010.
  • An $8.8 million warehouse renovation will create art instruction labs and studios; completion is expected by year-end 2008.
  • A $2.5 million renovation of the Washburn Observatory will be completed by May of 2009.
