The International Polar Foundation initiated the second phase of construction at the €22 million Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research station in November of 2008. The first construction phase, comprised of the exterior shell, was completed in early 2008. The 400-sm environmental research station will be officially inaugurated in February of 2009 after all interior systems have been installed and integrated. Located in Utsteinen, Antarctica, the zero-emission facility can withstand extreme temperatures and features solar panels, wind turbines, and water recycling.
