Bayer HealthCare opened its expanded research and development facility in Coon Rapids, Minn., in January of 2012. The 80,000-sf project houses manufacturing cleanrooms and R&D labs for the development of therapeutic treatment devices for vascular occlusions.
Florida Atlantic University opened the $19.3 million Harbor Branch Research Laboratory II in January of 2012 in Fort Pierce, Fla. Designed by PGAL with RFD (Research Facilities Design) as laboratory design consultant, the 42,000-sf project features 18 advanced research labs totaling 16,500 nsf, as well as lab support, offices, and conference rooms. The project construction manager was Balfour Beatty. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center completed construction of a cleanroom facility for the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission in January of 2012 in Greenbelt, Md. The 4,200-sf lab will accommodate the assembly and integration of four MMS spacecraft. Created by renovating an existing warehouse, the smart cleanroom features advanced filtration system that provides an environment with less that 10,000 particles per cubic foot.
The University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute is building a $32.5 million campus in Manteo, N.C. Designed by Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee, the 60,000-sf interdisciplinary research and education facility is sited on 213 acres and will include classrooms, teaching and research labs, and an auditorium. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which will include an advanced wastewater treatment system, geothermal heating and cooling, and a passive solar design.
Dow Corning opened the $11.5 million Solar Energy Exploration and Development (SEED) facility in January of 2012. The two-building project is located in Seneffe, Belgium, and includes the Solar Application Centre and the Silicone Synthesis Technology Centre. Designed by Group IPS, the sustainably designed R&D facility features a geothermal energy system with a heat pump, photovoltaic window shades, a glazed façade, and vacuum insulation panels.
Cleveland Clinic opened the $75 million Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Building in January of 2012. The 138,000-sf project houses advanced facilities for genomic, molecular, microbiologic, and DNA testing of specimens supplied by hospitals across the United States. Construction began on the sustainably designed building in 2009.
The University of Tennessee opened the $37.5 million Min H. Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building in January of 2012. Located in Knoxville, the 150,000-sf facility houses 19 research labs, 11 teaching labs, nine classrooms, a technology-rich auditorium, and over 100 faculty and graduate student offices. The duration of construction was three years. The architectural team for the sustainably designed building was Bullock, Smith & Partners and Lindsay and Maples Architects.
Radford University will begin construction in fall of 2012 on the $49 million Center for the Sciences in Radford, Va. The 115,000-sf building will provide teaching and research labs, faculty and staff offices, a planetarium, an earth sciences museum, and a climate-controlled zoology research suite. Completion is expected in fall of 2014.
Novartis is initiating a 550,000-sf expansion of its campus in Cambridge, Mass. The project includes construction of two biomedical laboratory and office buildings. The architectural team for the master plan and for one building is Maya Lin Studio and Bialosky + Partners. Toshiko Mori Architect is the designer of the second building. Cannon Design is the architect of record. Skanska USA Building will provide preconstruction, construction management, and design-build services.
A $94 million renovation of the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory will begin in early 2012. Located in Princeton, N.J., the project will upgrade the National Spherical Torus Experiment test facility to support the development of nuclear fusion energy technologies. The duration of construction will be 30 months with completion expected in 2014.
Hamilton Storage Technologies is building a 51,000-sf manufacturing center in Franklin, Mass. The $16 million facility will support production of sample retrieval and handling systems for life science research buildings. Completion is expected in late 2012.
The Strategy for UK Life Sciences was announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in December of 2012. The measures include $116 million for construction of a planned bioinformatics hub near Cambridge and $77 million for a Cell Therapy Technology and Innovation Centre in London. The initiative also provides $480 million to promote commercialization of biomedical research discoveries through collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
The Public Health Agency of Canada is building the J.C. Wilt Infectious Diseases Research Centre in Winnipeg. Designed by Smith Carter Architects and Engineers and built by PCL Constructors Canada, the $42 million project includes renovation of an existing structure to provide BSL-2 research space for the adjacent National Microbiology Laboratory. The construction cost of the facility is $23 million. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Occupancy is expected by February of 2013.
Brigham and Women's Hospital opened the 5,700-gsf Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating (AMIGO) suite in December of 2011 in Boston. As the world’s first three-bay operating suite to house MRI, PET/CT, Ultrasound, and Angiography in one place, along with surgical navigation tools and image registering and integration software, AMIGO offers significant advancements to developing image-guided surgical treatment procedures.
Ohio State University Medical Center is building the $1 billion Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute in Columbus. The 17-story, 276-bed tower will provide integrated research and treatment facilities including critical care beds, laboratories, and medical offices. Ground was broken on the project in June of 2010 and completion is expected in 2014.
