The University of Oklahoma is constructing the $75 million Stephenson Life Sciences Research Center in Norman. Slated for completion in summer of 2010, the 160,000-sf building is located on the south campus and will provide research labs, graduate study facilities, and support for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Upstate Medical University will begin construction in mid-2010 on a $72 million expansion of the Institute for Human Performance in Syracuse, N.Y. Doubling existing research space, the 100,000-sf addition will house biomedical research labs, offices, and a vivarium. The facility will support interdisciplinary research on nervous system disorders such as addiction, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Completion is expected in 2013.
The University of Manitoba broke ground in December of 2009 on the $4 million Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre in Ritchot. Located at the university's Glenlea Research Station near the Fort Garry campus, the 8,280-sf education and demonstration center is slated for completion in October of 2010.
The University of Wisconsin will begin construction in mid-2010 on the $75.7 million Wisconsin Energy Institute in Madison. Designed by HOK and Potter Lawson, the 200,000-sf facility will support renewable energy research. M.A. Mortenson Co. is the general contractor for the project.
Ruhr University will begin construction in 2010 on the 65,000-sf European Protein Research Institute in Bochum, Germany. Supported by $53 million in funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the facility will support research on protein biomarkers for cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases. Completion is expected in 2013. The building will house approximately 150 researchers and staff.
Michigan State University will begin construction in May of 2010 on the $43.2 million Plant Science Expansion in Lansing. The 90,000-sf, four-story structure will house open laboratories, plant growth chambers, and computational research space. Completion is expected in late 2011.
Central Texas College is building the $23 million Nursing Education Building in Killeen. Ground was broken on the facility in July of 2009 with completion expected in spring of 2011. The two-story, 85,000-sf project will be shared with Tarleton State University-Central Texas and Metroplex Hospital. The building will provide 19 classrooms, 69 faculty offices, and eight medical simulation labs.
Deloitte has awarded Turner Construction a $130 million contract to build a 712,000-sf learning and leadership development center in Fort Worth, Texas. Slated for completion in 2011, the facility will house 800 guest rooms, conference spaces, 35 classrooms, and 800 guest rooms. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.
Brown University is engaged in multiple construction projects on its campus in Providence, R.I. Faunce Hall, a 36,000-sf sf student center, is undergoing a $20 million renovation. Construction began on the $40 million Creative Arts Center in May of 2009. The 35,000-sf facility is slated for completion in fall of 2010. A $42 million renovation of the 73,000-sf Metcalf complex to house cognitive sciences and linguistics will begin in summer of 2010 with completion expected in fall of 2011.
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) is constructing a $50 million science and technology building in Odessa. Slated for completion in January of 2011, the facility will house the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science. The project will provide 32 teaching and research labs, 59 offices, two 100-seat lecture halls, a 200-seat lecture hall, and a computer room. UTPB is also building the $81 million Wagner Noél Performing Arts Center. Completion is expected in September of 2011.
The University of Dayton will relocate its Research Institute to a 455,000-sf facility recently acquired from NCR Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. The move will enable the university to expand research and development operations in areas such as high performance materials, sensors, and nanotechnology. The facility will also house the Alumni Center, graduate classrooms, and conference space.
The University of Macau officially broke ground in December of 2009 on its new Hengqin Island campus in Zhuhai, China. Providing world class education and research facilities, the campus will be able to accommodate over 10,000 students. Completion is expected within three years.
The Campus Biometropolis development will be constructed in Mexico City. Designed by Foster + Partners, the 71 hectare medical city will include research, instructional, and healthcare facilities. The mixed-use project will contain a hospital, laboratories, offices, a conference center, a hotel, shops, and apartments. The campus will accommodate companies focused on six key areas of medicine: cancer, cardiovascular, infectious diseases, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and geriatrics.
The University of Illinois College of Medicine is planning to construct a 24,000-sf cancer research center in Peoria. Construction will begin on the $13 million facility by summer of 2010.
Indiana University opened its $37.2 million data center in Bloomington in December of 2009. The facility is one of the first buildings at Indiana University's new technology park and houses information technology infrastructure and mission critical systems, including supercomputers Big Red and Quarry. The secure building is designed to increase reliability and protect from power outages and natural disasters. SmithGroup provided programming, site planning, architectural design, and interior design for the project.
