New York City Implements TRIRIGA TREES to Reduce Energy and Carbon Footprint

Construction Begins on Arizona State Forensic Hospital

The $23 million Arizona State Forensic Hospital is under construction in Phoenix. The 104,000-sf facility will provide 80 inpatient beds and is slated for completion in September of 2011. The facility was designed by Cannon Design and Jacobs Engineering Group and is being built by Gilbane Building Co. The forensic hospital will house testing areas, isolation rooms, a security center, and dining facilities for patients who are charged with criminal behavior but are too mentally ill to stand trial.

GSA Awards EMCOR Energy Services Blanket Purchase Agreement

San Diego County opened its $85 million Medical Examiner and Forensic Center in San Diego in January of 2010. The 84,000-sf facility houses a morgue, 17 technology-rich autopsy rooms, histology and toxicology labs, conference rooms, and advanced imaging suites.

NETL Builds Morgantown Testing Lab

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will construct a testing lab in Morgantown, W.V. Supported by $14 million in stimulus funding, the 35,000-sf Performance Verification Laboratory will accommodate the testing of appliances to determine if they meet Department of Energy (DOE) efficiency standards. Featuring controlled environments with consistent room temperatures, the Morgantown facility will be one of eight new research and testing facilities nationwide. Laboratory planning will commence in December of 2009 with completion expected by September of 2013.

Department of Defense Constructs BSL-3 Hazardous Materials Response Facility

The Department of Defense has awarded The Christman Co. a $12.5 million contract to build the Hazardous Materials Response Facility on the Pentagon Reservation in Arlington, Va. Designed by Lord, Aeck, and Sargent, the 28,000-sf facility will house a BSL-3 laboratory, offices, and equipment for responding to biological threats. Construction will begin on the project in spring of 2009 with completion slated for summer of 2011.

National Cancer Institute Plans Advanced Technology Research Facility

The National Cancer Institute will begin construction in fall of 2009 on the $200 million Advanced Technology Research Facility in Frederick, Md. Located in the Riverside Research Park, the 330,000-sf office and laboratory project is slated for completion by mid-2011. The National Cancer Institute is managed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

CDC Plans Chamblee Expansion

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is planning to construct two new office buildings in Chamblee, Ga. The $300 million project will create two research support facilities. A 294,800-gsf building and a 285,500-gsf building with accompanying parking decks will enable the CDC to foster interaction and collaboration by consolidating 2,000 researchers currently dispersed in leased locations.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Awards Flu Vaccine Development Contract

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $35 million contract in June of 2009 to Protein Sciences Corporation of Meriden, Conn., to pursue advanced development of recombinant influenza vaccine. The technology involves injecting flu virus genes into an insect virus (baculovirus) where it multiplies quickly in the insect cells, which are purified to become a part of a human vaccine.

Department of Energy Builds Hanford Groundwater Treatment Plant

The Department of Energy began construction on an $80 million groundwater treatment plant in Hanover, Wash., in July of 2009. The facility house a system capable of treating 85 million gallons per month of contaminated groundwater from the decommissioned Hanford nuclear site. Completion is expected by 2012. The project is part of $2 billion in stimulus funding allocated by the Department of Energy to support environmental remediation at Hanford.

National Security Agency Plans Data Center in Utah

The National Security Agency is planning to construct a 1 million-sf data center in Riverton, Utah. Supported by $181 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will enable the National Security Agency to protect sensitive information by decentralization of data from central computer hubs. Sited on 200 acres adjacent to land occupied by the Utah National Guard, the project will include a separate power substation, a vehicle inspection facility, a communications building, and training facilities.
