New U.S. Patent and Trademark HQ in Alexandria

LCOR Alexandria LLC, developer of the new U.S. Patent and Trademark headquarters, has chosen Turner Construction Company as the general contractor for the project. Scheduled for completion in June 2005, this massive project will consist of five office buildings totalling 2.6 million sf, two parking garages totalling 1.3 million sf, two townhouse/office buildings, and extensive sitework. The architect is Skidmore, Owings & Merrill through its Washington, D.C. office.

FDA Leases Beltsville Facility

Construction will begin in spring of 2002 on Ammendale South Technology Center in Beltsville, Md., where the Food and Drug Administration is leasing 51,000 sf of the 185,000-sf campus. Developed and leased by Manekin, the trio of one-story campus buildings was designed by Stephens Aylward & Associates.

DOT Headquarters Planned in D.C.

The General Services Administration has selected Southeast Federal Center in D.C. as the site of the Department of Transportation's (DOT)new 1.4-million-sf headquarters, to be located on 11 acres of a 55-acre plot of federal land. Relocation of the DOT's headquarters involves moving 7,500 to 7,900 federal employees.

Office of Naval Research Consolidates with Liberty Center Facility

The Office of Naval Research will consolidate its area employees at a new 13-story, 330,000-sf office facility at Liberty Center. Architect for the 1.7 million-sf Liberty Center complex is SmithGroup, with Clark Construction acting as general contractor. The Shooshan Co. is the developer for the $200-million redevelopment of the 4-acre former Ballston Center. Construction at the site is scheduled to begin in June 2002, with completion anticipated in 2004.

World Bank Considers Herndon Location

The World Bank, whose 8,000 employees are housed at its headquarters in downtown Washington, is planning to relocate its back-up office and computer operations outside the District following the events of September 11. The 200,000-sf Presidents Park office facility in Herndon is under consideration. Formerly occupied by Winstar, the structure could accommodate computers and personnel in an emergency, as well as provide technical data center equipment.

Brooklyn Army Terminal Renovation Contract Awarded

The New York office of Turner Construction Company was awarded a $29 million contract to renovate seven floors of an existing building at the Brooklyn Army Terminal by the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Turner is the construction manager for the 434,000-sf project, and also provided precontruction services to the owner. The architect is LZA Associates of New York City. Construction is scheduled for completion in April 2003.

University of Illinois Completes Nat'l Supercomputing Center

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s new National Center for Supercomputing Applications Advanced Computation Building Addition was recently completed by Holabird & Root of Chicago. The 17,000-sf facility features a 90 x 90-ft column-free space that can accommodate continually changing arrangements of hardware. The construction of the exterior allows the room to expand incrementally without the addition of walls or columns inside the space, while operating at full capacity.

US Institute of Peace To Build in DC

 The United States Institute of Peace will convert a parking lot near the Vietnam and Korean war memorials into a 75,000- to 100,000-sf facility to promote the use of peaceful means in the prevention, management, and resolution of international conflicts. The $31- to $35 million structure will house approximately 60 employees. It will accommodate both conference and research space as well as an exhibit area, and will provide 340 underground parking spaces, to be shared with the nearby Navy medical facility.

SEC To Build HQ at Station Place

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has decided that its new 650,000-sf headquarters—called Station Place—will be built adjacent to Union Station and the Thurgood Marshall Building. The architect for the project is New York-based Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates; it will be developed by Louis Dreyfus Properties, also of New York. December 2003 is the scheduled occupancy date.

California Dept. of Justice Builds New DNA Lab

The State of California has contracted with Wareham Development for 68,000 sf at the Point Richmond Tech Center to house a new DNA-testing lab for the Department of Justice. Following $300/sf tenant improvements by Wareham, the state will occupy the lab in late 2001, where a DNA database of every criminal in California will be compiled.

The Food and Drug Administration dedicated its new 350,000-gsf Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, which adjoins the College Park Metro station, on October 1. The five-story structure, designed by Kallman, McKinnell & Wood, accommodates state-of-the-art chemistry and life sciences labs, office space, support facilities, an auditorium, a library, three training rooms, and conference rooms on each floor. Special features include an atrium, fitness center, health center, automated teller machine, and a secure parking lot.

Bavin Nat'l Forensic Lab Expands in Ashland

The Clark R. Bavin National Forensic Laboratory in Ashland is planning a 37,000-sf addition and renovation. It is the only comprehensive full-service wildlife crime lab in the world, and serves an international purpose by meeting the forensic needs of wildlife agencies globally. HERA Inc. of St. Louis is responsible for laboratory programming for the addition that will supplement the existing 23,000-sf crime lab facility. HarleyEllis in Southfield, Mich., is the architect and engineer.

New York City Plans New Forensic Biology Lab

The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is planning a new state-of-the-art forensic biology laboratory. The 322,000-gsf, state-of-the-art DNA facility will consolidate disconnected forensic activities conducted at separate sites into one new 12-story facility at Bellevue Hospital Center. HERA Inc.   of St. Louis is providing forensic lab design. Perkins Eastman Architects in association with LSGM Architects in New York are the architects for the project.
