Santa Rosa Junior College Designs Lindley Center for STEM Education

Santa Rosa Junior College is planning to build the $75 million Lindley Center for STEM Education in Santa Rosa, Calif. Designed by SmithGroup and Strata AP with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory design consultant, the 92,000-sf interdisciplinary facility will provide leading-edge teaching labs and classrooms to accommodate programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Groundbreaking is slated for spring of 2020 with completion expected in 2022.

Gustavus Adolphus College Expands and Renovates Nobel Hall of Science

Gustavus Adolphus College is engaged in a $70 million expansion and renovation of the Nobel Hall of Science in St. Peter, Minn. Designed by Hastings+Chivetta with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory design consultant, the project includes construction of a 74,000-sf addition on the south side housing classrooms, study spaces, and labs. On the north side, a 12,400-sf expansion will highlight student/faculty research projects and showcase the College’s signature event, The Nobel Conference.

LAVLE USA Plans Marine Electric Propulsion Simulation Lab

LAVLE USA is partnering with Old Dominion University to create the $12 million Marine Electric Propulsion Simulation (MEPS) Laboratory in Newport News, Va. Supporting both military and commercial applications, the 22,000-sf facility will house sophisticated instrumentation for the development of electric propulsion, advanced energy storage, and autonomous systems technologies. Construction is expected to begin in summer of 2019 with completion in summer of 2020.

McLaren Health Care Breaks Ground on Lansing Hospital

McLaren Health Care broke ground in December of 2018 on a $450 million medical campus in Lansing, Mich. Located in Michigan State University's Corporate Research Park, the project will include a 240-bed acute care hospital, a cancer center, and a medical services building. Designed to promote academic collaboration, the campus will also offer facilities for research, education, and training.

EMD Serono's Project SagaMORE Named 2018 Green Building of the Year

EMD Serono’s Project SagaMORE has been named the 2018 Green Building of the Year by the Massachusetts chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. Located on EMD Serono's biopharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Billerica, the two-story, 30,000-sf addition offers open-plan work areas, a central auditorium, and numerous meeting spaces to support the development of advanced medical therapies. The $12 million project has jointly achieved WELL Gold certification for New & Existing Construction.

Stanford University Builds Center for Academic Medicine

Stanford University is building the Center for Academic Medicine in Palo Alto, Calif. Designed by HOK, the four-story, 170,000-gsf facility will provide consolidated administrative space for clinical faculty, computational researchers, and departmental leadership. The collaborative project will include a conference center, a café, a fitness center, and a three-story, 830-space underground parking structure. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2020.

Dartmouth College Breaks Ground on Engineering & Computer Science Building

Dartmouth College began construction in January of 2019 on a $200 million expansion of its engineering and computer science facilities in Hanover, N.H. Featuring a large central atrium and collaborative design studios, the 160,000-sf building will accommodate the Thayer School of Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, the Magnuson Family Center for Entrepreneurship, and the Dartmouth Electron Microscopy Facility. The interdisciplinary facility will be located on top of a three-story, 340-car underground parking structure.

University of Colorado Boulder Plans Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub

The University of Colorado is planning to construct a $45 million Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub in Boulder. Built as an addition that will physically connect the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Business, the 75,000-sf project will include 45,000 gsf of new construction and 30,000 gsf of renovated space. The collaborative facility will provide technology-enhanced classrooms for active learning, an auditorium, a library, faculty offices, team rooms, a multipurpose event space, and an interdisciplinary entrepreneurship center.

Nebraska Wesleyan University Opens Acklie Hall of Science

Nebraska Wesleyan University opened the $29 million Duane W. Acklie Hall of Science in December of 2018 in Lincoln. Designed by The Clark Enersen Partners to put science on display, the three-story, 80,000-sf facility provides six classrooms, 15 laboratories, faculty offices, study areas, and collaboration spaces for the departments of chemistry, biology, and psychology. Sampson Construction broke ground on the project in April of 2017.

Heriot Watt University Plans National Robotarium

Heriot Watt University is planning to construct the National Robotarium in Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. Created in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, the £100 million innovation hub will support research and development on robotics and autonomous systems as well as providing instruction and training facilities for computational science programs. The project is an integral part of the region’s Data Driven Innovation (DDI) initiative that aims to establish the area as the data capital of Europe. Occupancy is expected in 2021.

Sanofi Leases Two Buildings at Cambridge Crossing

Sanofi announced the lease of 900,000 sf in two buildings in the Cambridge Crossing development in December of 2018. The French pharmaceutical manufacturer will occupy approximately a fifth of the 45-acre campus spanning Cambridge, Boston, and Somerville. The project will provide collaborative laboratory and office space for 2,700 Sanofi employees.

University of Manchester Opens Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre

The University of Manchester opened the £60 million Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre in December of 2018 in the United Kingdom. Located in the new 91,000-sf Masdar Building on the North campus, the facility will accommodate collaborative materials science research and development with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Khalifa University of Science and Technology.

16 Tech Breaks Ground on Advanced Research and Innovation Facility

16 Tech Community Corporation broke ground in December of 2018 on the $30 million Advanced Research and Innovation Facility in Indianapolis. The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute will lease over 67,000 sf on the first three floors of the building to accommodate researchers engaged in the study of diabetes, nutrition, and metabolics. Indiana University School of Medicine will locate the Center for Regenerative Medicine's molecular therapeutics program in 12,000 sf of the facility, which will also house the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership.
