Hitachi's Elevator Research Tower Nears Completion

Hitachi’s elevator research tower is slated for completion in April of 2010. Standing 700 feet tall, the building will enable Hitachi to test elevators capable of traveling up to 40 miles per hour. Located in Hitachinaka City in Japan, the research facility will support engineering and development of high-speed passenger and cargo elevators.

University of Michigan Health System Opens Brehm Tower

The University of Michigan Health System opened the $132 million Brehm Tower in Ann Arbor in March of 2010. Part of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center Complex, the 230,000-sf facility houses seven eye care clinics, surgical suites, and laboratories for ophthalmology and diabetes research. The eight-story facility was designed by TSA of Cambridge, Mass., and features an open lab layout and abundant natural lighting.

Ras Al Khaimah Builds Centre for Advanced Materials

The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah began construction in March of 2010 on the Centre for Advanced Materials (RAK-CAM). The research facility will provide over 10,000 sm of laboratory and office space and will house electron microscopes, x-ray diffractometers, and optical spectrometers. RAK-CAM will support research on solar energy, environmental catalysis, advanced ceramic materials, and renewable energy. Completion is slated for early 2011.

Clairvoyant Energy and Xtreme Power Initiate Wixom Renovation

A former Ford assembly plant will be renovated by Clairvoyant Energy of Santa Barbara, Calif., to house production facilities for high-efficiency solar panels. The renovation is part of a $1.2 billion project to transform the 320-acre site into the nation’s largest renewable energy business park. Xtreme Power of Austin, Texas, will renovate over 1 million sf at the Wixom campus to create manufacturing space for turnkey power systems. The creation of the renewable energy park is supported by state and federal funding.

CentraState Healthcare Breaks Ground on Proton Therapy Facility

CentraState Healthcare System is partnering with ProCure Treatment Centers and Princeton Radiation Oncology to build a $160 million proton therapy cancer center in Somerset, N.J. The 60,000-sf facility will house four treatment rooms. A formal groundbreaking is scheduled for April of 2010 with occupancy slated for March of 2012.
