New Biorefining Technology Provides Solution for Pathogenic Waste
A new Canadian biorefining technology has been adopted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) as a recommended technology for the destruction of all transmissible spongiform encephalopathy and microbiological disease agents. The 175 member countries of the OIE formally approved the technology at the 78th General Session held in Paris in May of 2010 for incorporation into the 2010 Terrestrial Animal Health Code.
Oregon Health & Science University Constructs Primate Support Facility
Oregon Health and Science University will build two research support facilities at the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Portland, Ore. Supported by $4 million in federal stimulus funding, the project includes outdoor group housing for non-human primates and a 2,344-nsf clinic and hospital facility.
University of Queensland Opens School of Veterinary Science
The University of Queensland opened the $100 million School of Veterinary Science in Gatton in August of 2010. The teaching and research complex includes the Veterinary Science Building, the UQ Veterinary Medical Centre Pre-Clinical Teaching Laboratories, the Veterinary Clinical Studies Building, and the Equine and Companion Animal Hospitals. The school will accommodate 550 veterinary science students.
AALAS Releases Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Comparison Guide
AALAS has created a free comparison table for the 1996 vs. the 2010 Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The guide is available online as a download from AALAS. These changes will be explored in detail at a Tradeline pre-conference workshop on November 7, 2010.
Stony Brook University Plans ABSL-3 Facility
Stony Brook University will construct an ABSL-3 research facility at the Health Sciences Center in Stony Brook, N.Y. Supported by $14.1 million in federal stimulus funding, the 16,140-sf facility will have a small animal suite, an insectary, and an imaging suite with an adjacent room for work with large animals. Accommodating research with select agents, the facility will include Class II biosafety cabinets, a pass-through cold room, cage and rack washers, ventilated animal housing equipment, and a pass-through autoclave.
