Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System Plans Research Center and Vivarium
Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System is planning to build a $127 million basic science research center and vivarium in Palo Alto, Calif. Construction will begin in 2013 and reach completion within two years. The 143,000-sf facility will house flexible, open wet labs to promote researcher interaction and collaboration. A 31,500-sf animal research vivarium will be located in the basement.
Institute of Animal Health Celebrates Pirbright Facility Topping Out
The Institute of Animal Health celebrated the topping out of its £100 million biocontainment laboratory in Pirbright, U.K. Housing over 150 investigators and support staff, the facility will support research on emerging, existing, and vector-borne infectious diseases in animal and human populations. The general contractor for the project is Shepherd Construction. Occupancy is expected in 2014.
The Jackson Laboratory Plans Farmington Animal Research Facility
The Jackson Laboratory is planning to build a $1.1 billion animal research facility on the University of Connecticut Health Center's Farmington campus. The first phase of the project will include a 173,000-sf facility housing laboratory and vivarium space. The public-private partnership will support biomedical research for the creation of personalized medicine solutions. Construction will begin in early 2013 with completion expected in late 2014. The completed Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine will eventually total 250,000 sf.
Getinge USA and Detach AB Announce Cage Management Solution for Vivarium Facilities
Getinge USA and Detach AB have formed a global strategic partnership to provide a complete solution for cage processing in biomedical research facilities. Combining Detach AB's technology with Getinge's cleaning and decontamination processes, the robotic system will perform safe and efficient cleaning, decontamination, bedding handling, and bottle processing. The cage management platform will reduce energy consumption and minimize allergen exposure for laboratory staff.
University of Saskatchewan Opens International Vaccine Centre
The University of Saskatchewan opened the $140 million International Vaccine Center (InterVac) in Saskatoon in September of 2011. Designed by Smith Carter of Winnipeg, the 145,000-sf facility houses BSL-3 containment laboratories for infectious disease and vaccine research. Commissioning is expected to reach completion within five months and occupancy is expected in spring of 2012. InterVac will support research on pathogens including avian flu, SARS, West Nile virus, bovine tuberculosis, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
