Tokyo Electron to Expand in Austin
Tokyo Electron America has received approval in September to construct a new 70,700-sf office building at their corporate campus in East Austin. The new structure will connect with the company’s existing 77,864-sf facility, and will provide additional space to accommodate increased staff. The company, which manufactures semiconductor equipment, has been working with the engineer consulting firm Baker-Aicklen & Associates.
Concordia University Breaks Ground on Center for Learning and Leadership
Concordia University recently broke ground on the Walter and Maxine Christopher Center for Learning and Leadership, a 83,000-sf three-story structure designed by Holabird & Root of Chicago. The center will provide a setting for modeling ideal teaching environments and promoting the highest standards of quality care for young children.
NIST Builds Advanced Measurement Lab
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently awarded a $174-million construction contract for the Advanced Measurement Laboratory. The prime contractor is Clark/Gilford, a joint venture between The Clark Construction Group of Bethesda, Md., and Gilford Corporation of Beltsville, Md. HDR Architecture of Alexandria, Va., designed the 511,040-sf facility; completion is scheduled for 2004.
Washington University Builds Biomedical Engineering Building
Washington University broke ground in early October 2000 on the university’s Uncas A. Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering building, designed by Boston-based architects Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott. The new three-story facility will include a flexible laboratory wing comprised of 22,000 sf of wet lab space and 12,500 sf of procedure equipment and environmental areas (which will include a nanofabrication lab, vivarium, electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance suites).
BellSouth Plans Service Center for Fleming Island
BellSouth began construction in December 2000 on the Unbundled Network Element Services Center, a $35-million, 75,000-sf technical support center at a 15.5-acre site in Clay County, Fla. Completion is anticipated in June 2001. The center will serve to assist new phone companies that sell local phone service by buying BellSouth’s phone line service. The center will provide backup for similar operations BellSouth has in Birmingham, Ala., and in Atlanta.
