Toyota Builds Tijuana Manufacturing Plant
Toyota is planning to build a plant in Tijuana to manufacture its Tacoma pickup truck beds. Located on 700 acres in eastern Tijuana, the plant will produce 160,000 truck beds annually. Construction is slated to begin in spring of 2002 with production to begin at the plant in 2004.
Novo Nordisk Insulin Plant On Hold
Plans to construct a second insulin manufacturing plant in Clayton have been put on hold by Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals' Danish parent company due to research delays. The plant would manufacture insulin in the form of an inhalant, the clinical trials of which have been delayed. Novo Nordisk's existing insulin manufacturing plant occupies 50 of 260 acres owned by the pharmaceutical firm in Clayton; the new plant would be constructed adjacent to it.
Valero Builds San Antonio Headquarters
Valero Energy Corp. has selected SpawGlass Contractors of San Antonio to build its new headquarters at the 148-acre campus of Ultramar Diamond Shamrock (UDS), recently acquired by Valero. The 200,000- to 300,000-sf office structure will consolidate Valero’s operations. Plans for the company’s existing two-building, 260,000-sf headquarters in North San Antonio are uncertain. Existing buildings at the UDS site include a headquarters (225,000 sf) and an annex (20,000 sf); both buildings, as well as the existing Valero headquarters, are full to capacity.
E Commerce To Open Charlotte Data Center
E Commerce, an electronic billing service headquartered in New York, plans to geographically diversify its operations by placing its new data center in Charlotte. The company will open a 4,600-sf data center in April 2002 at the Claude Freeman Technology Center, which is equipped with an uninterrupted power source and the high-tech equipment E Commerce needs for its operations.
Office of Naval Research Consolidates with Liberty Center Facility
The Office of Naval Research will consolidate its area employees at a new 13-story, 330,000-sf office facility at Liberty Center. Architect for the 1.7 million-sf Liberty Center complex is SmithGroup, with Clark Construction acting as general contractor. The Shooshan Co. is the developer for the $200-million redevelopment of the 4-acre former Ballston Center. Construction at the site is scheduled to begin in June 2002, with completion anticipated in 2004.
