Genetech Hall Under Construction at UC Mission Bay
Genentech’s 385,000-sf, $145-million biotechnology facility—Genentech Hall— is under way at the University of California, San Francisco’s new Mission Bay campus. Executive architect for the project is the SmithGroup of San Francisco. Turner Construction is the construction manager for the building, which is more than 60 percent complete. A 1,200-sf atrium and a 2,500-sf cafeteria are some of the amenities in the new building.
Smith & Hawken Opens Corporate Headquarters in Novato
Smith & Hawken, purveyors of up-scale garden products, has opened its corporate headquarters at Hamilton Landing, a $100-million office park under construction at the former Hamilton Field military base in Marin County. The developer of the project, Barker Pacific, has converted four of seven hangars thus far. The Smith & Hawken headquarters features a 38'-high atrium, 11' ceiling heights, openable windows, an HVAC system that uses outside air, and raised flooring.
Opex Pharmaceuticals To Build Houston Manufacturing Facility
Opexa Pharmaceuticals has selected PageSoutherlandPage Architects, Engineers, and Consultants of Houston to provide architecture, engineering, commissioning, and validation support services for Opexa’s new manufacturing facility. The 27,000-sf structure will include corporate offices and a new production facility to manufacture pharmaceuticals for autoimmune diseases, focusing on multiple sclerosis.
Sybase Occupies New Dublin Headquarters
Sybase, the e-business software and database maker, has relocated 1,000 employees from Emeryville, Calif., to its new 406,000-sf headquarters in Dublin. Wilcox Development Services developed the two-buildings, which are connected by a bridge. Administrative staff is housed in one building; engineering staff, a day care center and fitness center are housed in the other. The day care center, scheduled to open in March, will accommodate up to 52 children, whose parents can watch them via a Web cam.
Slough Estates Develops for Biotech in SF
Britain-based Slough Estates USA is planning to develop the Britannia East Grand in South San Francisco, a 783,533-sf biotech facility designed by South San Francisco-based DES and to be built by Hathaway Dinwiddie. Pending final approval in April 2002, the $300 million project involves replacing the 100-year-old ICI paint factory with a leading-edge biotech laboratory. Slated to break ground mid-year, the project would bring Slough's South San Francisco holdings to over 2.7 million sf.
