Transamerica Pyramid Security Renovation in Progress

Transamerica Corp. is adding significant new security features to its high-rise, the 500,000-sf Transamerica Pyramid in downtown San Francisco. A $3-million exterior upgrade will surround the building with 98 steel bollards, interspersed with trees. The lobby is undergoing a $3.5-million upgrade providing tenants two entrances controlled by card key access desks, a separate messenger drop-off desk, and new flooring and lighting. A new entry to the garage, and a valet gateway will also be provided. Completion of the upgrades is anticipated in July 2002.

FedEx Develops San Francisco Office and Distribution Facility

FedEx Corp., based in Memphis, Tenn., plans to convert a former rice milling plant in San Francisco into a new 115,000-sf office and distribution facility. The $10-million project, designed by Solano Beach, Calif.-based McMahon Development Group, includes a two-story, 10,000-sf office building topped with  parking, and a warehouse providing 115 van stalls, 250 parking slots, vehicle maintenance garages, and a customer counter. Construction at the 4.2-acre site is scheduled to begin in June 2002, with operations commencing in December 2002.

Mt. Holyoke College Designs "Green" Science Center

Mt. Holyoke College is designing its new science center and Blanchard Student Center renovation to comply with strict national green design standards. With both buildings certified to meet the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, these sustainable design buildings are part of 53,000,000 sf of commercial, residential, retail and government space that has been built to U.S. Green Building Council standards since the LEED certification program began two years ago.

Kosan Biosciences Considers Mission Bay in SF

Kosan Biosciences may lease a two-story, 85,000-sf facility in San Francisco's Mission Bay. Developed by Catellus Development, the building stands adjacent to new University of California San Francisco facilities. Kosan, a Hayward, Calif.-based biotech firm that is alternately considering remaining in Hayward, has nearly 100 employees and a cancer compound in early clinical trials. Construction on the Mission Bay facility will begin in July 2002 if the lease is signed.

Gallo Clinic Seeks San Francisco Facility

The Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center is seeking up to 150,000 sf in San Francisco for its new home. The Emeryville, Calif.-based clinic has considered Catellus Development's Mission Bay and some south of Market locations. Proximity to research and funding collaborator UCSF is a factor in the possible relocation to San Francisco. The Gallo Clinic performs research in neuroscience, cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, and biochemistry, seeking genetic keys and therapies for alcohol and drug abuse.
