Cardinal and Magellan Laboratories Expand Operations
Magellan Pharmaceutical Development, recently acquired by Cardinal Laboratories, will increase its Morrisville operations from 210,000 sf to approximately 360,000 sf. The $15- to $20-million expansion will occur over the next two to three years. Magellan will also utilize a 75,000-sf biotechnology plant purchased by Cardinal in north Raleigh to expand its Triangle services. Cardinal is also constructing an $80-million clinical manufacturing plant in Somerset, N.J. which will employ up to 300 workers.
University of Missouri Builds Life Sciences Center
The University of Missouri Columbia is building a new 124,000-nsf Life Sciences Center (LSC). Construction began in December of 2001 on the $60-million project which will include a DNA research facility, five teaching/computer labs, a 250-seat auditorium, 50 research labs, technologically advanced classrooms, a greenhouse, and multipurpose equipment rooms. The facility will provide flexible space to maximize interactions and foster interdisciplinary team research.
ACET Triples Alameda Facilities
Advancing California's Emerging Technologies (ACET), an Alameda-based biotech incubator, will begin construction on a new 30,000-sf lab complex in December 2002. Funded by a $6.4-million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the complex will triple ACET's existing facilities, and will include forty 500-sf labs, video conferencing facilities, an international trade office, and parking on the 3.5-acre site.
Rutgers University Plans Camden Expansion
Rutgers University is planning to expand its law school with the construction of a $20-million, 50,000-sf facility in the next three years. The building will be sited on a 2.2-acre surface parking lot adjacent to the existing 95,000-sf law school building. Rutgers is also moving to acquire Camden's Plaza Hotel to convert it into up to 250 graduate student housing apartments. The project will include ground level retail and will be launched in the next three years.
Hays County Designs Government Center
Hays County has contracted the Austin office of Fort Worth-based Carter & Burgess to create the master plan and design for its consolidated courts and government center. Located on an eight acre county-owned site in central San Marcos, the complex will include four buildings. The first two facilities are estimated to reach 140,000- to 150,000 sf. Hays County currently occupies 80,000-sf in six separate San Marcos buildings.
