Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center Planned in South Texas

The Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of South Texas, a 3.4-million veterinary medical facility, will begin construction in North San Antonio by November 2003. Slated for completion in January 2005, the 18,500-sf center will house animal medicine specialties including oncology, radiology, internal medicine, dermatology, physical therapy, surgery, and ophthalmology. The facility will also house a 24-hour emergency department. The project architect is Marmon Mok with Metropolitan Contracting Co. as general contractor.

Sibley Memorial Hospital Completes Decontamination Facility

Sibley Memorial Hospital recently completed a new decontamination facility at its Washington, D.C. location. In the event of a bioterrorist attack, the unit’s five showers and two dedicated rinse areas can accommodate up to fifty people per hour and a total of seven people at one time. The decontamination facility is located just outside Sibley’s emergency department.

GSA Upgrades Department of Commerce Building

The General Services Administration has selected GGA.Ehrenkrantz Eckstut& Kuhn Architects to design the 1.8 million-sf, $540 million upgrade of the Department of Commerce facility in Washington, D.C. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and includes the White House Visitors Center, the National Aquarium, and a parking garage.  GGA.Ehrenkrantz Eckstut& Kuhn Architects is a partnership of Group Goetz Architects of D.C. and Ehrenkrantz Eckstut& Kuhn Architects of New York.

Georgia Tech Opens Hotel and Conference Center

Georgia Institute of Technology celebrated the opening of the $47-million Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center on September 4, 2003. Part of the $196 million Technology Square development, the 252-room hotel and high-tech executive conference center broke ground in October 2001 and features wireless Internet, video conferencing, and its own satellite uplink. Hotel rooms include flat-screen televisions and T-1 line Internet connections. The building was designed by architects Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates Inc.

University of Washington Develops Medical Research Center

The University of Washington is renovating the 105,00-sf Blue Flame Building in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle as the future home of UW Medicine Lake Union. Vulcan Inc. is the design and construction planner for the project, which is slated to begin in January and reach completion in November 2004. The building will house cancer research, the Program for Translational Medicine in Women's Health, and the Center for Cardiovascular Biology.
