University of Toronto Plans Passive House Student Residence
The University of Toronto will begin construction in summer of 2020 on the 265,000-sf Passive House Student Residence on the Scarborough campus. The 746-bed development will accommodate three distinct residential communities, with private study spaces, gathering areas, and kitchen facilities in each cluster. A high-performance building envelope with a vertically patterned aluminum cladding system will frame strategically sized windows, maximizing access to natural light while minimizing heat loss.
GRAM Opens Cleanroom and Formulation Facility
Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing (GRAM) opened a $60 million facility for injectable fill-and-finish operations in June of 2020. Tripling GRAM's existing footprint in Grand Rapids, Mich., the 61,500-sf expansion provides a Grade C cleanroom, two formulation suites, and 14,000 sf of shell space to accommodate future growth. The facility leverages leading-edge automation technologies and high-speed instrumentation to accelerate the production of parenteral therapies. The project was delivered in just 20 months by design-build contractor CRB.
Auburn University Builds Culinary Science Center
Auburn University is building the $110 million Tony & Libba Rane Culinary Science Center in Auburn, Ala. Designed by Cooper Carry to provide students with immersive learning experiences in hospitality management and culinary sciences, the 142,000-sf complex will feature food production and demonstration labs, a teaching restaurant, a brewing science center, and a luxury boutique hotel. The structure will also accommodate classrooms, instructional labs, collaboration spaces, a food hall, a café, a spa, and a rooftop garden.

University of Salford Plans Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Automation and Robotics
The University of Salford will begin construction in summer of 2021 on the £13 million Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Automation and Robotics in the United Kingdom. Designed by 5plus architects, the 21,000-sf facility will provide a variety of instructional spaces as well as specialized labs for robotics, manufacturing, and health technologies. An automotive hub on the ground floor will accelerate the development of new transportation and mobility solutions.
