University of Arizona Constructs Research and Teaching Facilities

The University of Arizona expanded its Tucson campus with the completion of three new research and laboratory facilities in 2006. All three were designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Portland, Ore. The $46.1-million, 85,000-sf Chemistry Building will consolidate chemistry teaching and research programs and is slated for completion in late spring of 2006. GSI and LIAI Dedicate La Jolla Joint Research Facility

Gemini Science Inc. (GSI) and La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology (LIAI) completed a new 145,000-sf collaborative research facility in La Jolla, Calif., in July of 2006. Located in the UC San Diego Science Research Park, the facility was designed by Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker and built by DPR Construction.

University of Nebraska Medical Center Breaks Ground on Second Research Tower

The University of Nebraska Medical Center broke ground on a $74-million research tower on its Omaha campus on August 8, 2006. Known as the Research Center of Excellence II (RCEII), the 10-level. 252,179-gsf facility is nearly identical to the Durham Research Tower and will house 98 state-of-the-art laboratories, lab support, and investigator offices. The two research towers will be connected with a covered parkway.

Georgia Tech Breaks Ground on Marcus Nanotechnology Building

Georgia Tech broke ground on the Marcus Nanotechnology Building in Atlanta in August of 2006. With 20,000-sf of nanotechnology physical science and engineering space next to 10,000-sf of biomedical and biological nanotechnology space, the facility will accommodate scientists from the university system as well as the private sector. Completion is slated for summer of 2008.
