Department of Veterans Affairs Plans Lake Nona Medical Center

The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning to construct a $377.7 million medical center in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, Fla. The project includes a 134-bed hospital, a 120-bed nursing home, and an outpatient clinic. Construction is expected to begin within one year, with completion possible by 2012. The facility, which will serve veterans from ten counties, will be located adjacent to the University of Central Florida Medical School and The Burnham Institute.

Texas A&M University Opens Qatar Engineering Building

Texas A&M University celebrated the opening of the QR520mn Engineering Research Building in Doha, Qatar, in March 2007. Located in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City, the facility is designed to be the most technologically advanced engineering research and education facility in the world. Designed by architects Ricardo Legorreta and Victor Legorreta, the complex consists of a four-story academic quadrangle connected to a three-story research building via an open multi-story atrium.

University of Toledo Plans Athletics Complex

The University of Toledo has selected SSOE, Inc. and Ellerbe Becket as the architects for its upcoming Athletics Complex project. The project includes the construction of an addition to Savage Hall, the renovation of the Savage Hall arena, and the construction of an indoor practice facility adjacent to Savage Hall. Designs for Savage Hall and the new indoor practice facility will be unveiled in late 2007.

Humboldt State University Constructs Hydrogen Fueling Station

Humboldt State University is constructing a hydrogen fueling station at the Schatz Energy Research Center in Arcata, Calif. Funded in part by a $350,000 gift from Chevron Technology Ventures, the station will include an electrolyzer for on-site hydrogen production, storage tanks, a compressor, and a dispenser. The station is part of California's Hydrogen Highway program and will fuel a hydrogen-powered Toyota Prius and two additional vehicles.

AstraZeneca Builds Macclesfield R&D Lab

AstraZeneca is initiating construction in the first half of 2007 on a $120-million Process Research and Development Laboratory in Macclesfield in the United Kingdom. Housing 170 scientists and specialists in the fields of chemistry, process engineering, and project management, the multidisciplinary facility will feature flexible lab space able to expand to accommodate up to 50 additional staff members in the future. The laboratory is scheduled to become operational in mid-2009.
