CSIRO Opens High-Throughput Animal Disease Lab
Australia’s CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) opened its high-throughput diagnostic emergency response center in Geelong in July of 2008. The leading edge laboratory will provide rapid testing of samples for animal diseases such as foot and mouth or equine influenza. Providing a core diagnostic area, a test development and validation facility, and space for predictive biomodeling, the secure facility is able to perform serology tests on up to 10,000 samples per day in the event of an outbreak.
ACE DuraFlo Creates ePIPE Restoration Technology
ACE DuraFlo Systems announced the release of the new ePIPE system in July of 2008. ePIPE is a patented, “in-place” epoxy-based pipe restoration technology that restores failing copper and encrusted galvanized pipes to like-new condition without the extensive demolition that accompanies traditional plumbing methods.

Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System is engaged in a $750 million renovation and expansion of its medical campus in Palo Alto, Calif.
Department of Health Occupies Biocontainment Lab
The Department of Health occupied its 5,285-sf BSL-3 laboratory in Washington, D.C., on May 29, 2008. Planning for the $9.6 million project began in 1999. The facility will support rapid identification of emerging disease agents and potential biological threats with the capacity to perform up to 30,000 tests per year.
Beacon Institute Builds Center for Advanced Environmental Research
Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries is constructing the Center for Advanced Environmental Research (CAER) in Beacon, N.Y. Designed by Croxton Collaborative Architects and built by Turner Construction, the 30,000-sf research facility will support the development of river system monitoring technologies including networking and data analysis related to environmental sensors. The River and Estuary Observatory Network (REON) will be headquartered in the new facility.
