American Howa Expands Kentucky Facility

American Howa initiated a 56,000-sf expansion of its manufacturing facility in Bowling Green, Ky., in November of 2008. The $12 million expansion will accommodate three new manufacturing lines and 24 additional employees. The existing 81,294-sf facility was completed in early 2008.

University of Edinburgh Builds Centre for Systems Biology

The University of Edinburgh is building the £7 million Centre for Systems Biology in Edinburgh, Scotland. The project began construction in January of 2008 and is slated for completion in 2009. The Centre will be housed in 900 sm in the C.H. Waddington Building, a three-story facility that will accommodate multidisciplinary laboratories and office space for research in biological sciences, informatics, and infectious diseases. The building will also house the Centre for Translational and Chemical Biology.

Van Andel Institute Expands in Grand Rapids

The Van Andel Institute is constructing a second research building on its campus in Grand Rapids, Mich. The $175 million, 240,000-sf facility was designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects of New York. The eight-story building will house neurological and translational research laboratories, the Van Andel Graduate School, and space for Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. The joint venture construction team is Owen-Ames-Kimball Company of Grand Rapids and The Hunt Construction Group.

Clarian Health Expands La Porte Community Health Center

Clarian Health broke ground on a $1.2 million expansion of La Porte Hospital Community Health Center (CHC) in November of 2008. Located in La Porte, Ind., the project will create six additional exam rooms, a laboratory, and a community education classroom. The expansion will enable CHC to provide additional outpatient care, imaging, diagnostic treatment, and dental services. Completion is slated for October of 2009.

BATF Breaks Ground on Explosives Training and Research Center

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms broke ground on the National Center for Explosives Training and Research in Huntsville, Ala., in November of 2008. Slated for completion in 2010, the facility is located at the Redstone Arsenal and will include three explosive ranges, eight classrooms, a conference room, laboratories, and offices.
