The Medical University of South Carolina is constructing a $50 million facility for the College of Health Professions in Charleston. Designed by Clark Nexsen and SMHa, the 90,000-sf project will accommodate allied health programs in a range of specialties including physician assistants, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and health administrators. The leading-edge structure will feature sophisticated environments for teaching, research, and collaboration, as well as housing the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and the Center for Rehabilitation Research in Neurological Conditions.
In the Human Abilities Lab, a simulated apartment will equip students to address patient challenges in a residential setting. The Clinical Research Center for Restoration of Neural-Based Function in the Real World (RENEW) will occupy the top two floors. Featuring progressive learning venues that integrate academic instruction with lab-based training, the six-story facility will also provide multipurpose classrooms, faculty and staff offices, conference rooms, and support spaces.
Illuminated by natural light, the resilient development is sited three feet above an existing floodplain and will incorporate numerous hurricane mitigation strategies, with a rooftop penthouse protecting mechanical and electrical equipment. The development is being built by Thompson Turner Construction and Rodgers Builders. Ground was broken in December of 2023 and occupancy is expected in 2026.
