The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center achieved LEED Gold sustainable design certification in July of 2011. The $826 million project was delivered under a design-build contract by joint venture firm Clark/Balfour Beatty. The project team included executive architect HKS Architects, architectural renovation and construction design consultant Wingler Sharp, historic preservation consultant Hartman-Cox Architects, mechanical engineer Southland Industries, and electrical engineer M.C. Dean. The new construction at Walter Reed that attained LEED Gold includes the six-story, 560,000-sf America Building; the four-story, 165,000-sf Arrowhead Building; and a 939-space parking garage. The project features an enthalpy heat recovery wheel and high-efficiency water-cooled centrifugal chillers.
