Published 6/13/2011

Green Mountain College has awarded UGL Services a five-year contract to provide facilities services and grounds management and to operate GMC’s biomass power generation plant. The company is maintaining 20 buildings comprising more than 500,000 square feet of academic, administrative, athletic, and residential space, as well as 155 acres of natural and landscaped property and athletic fields. UGL Services fits into GMC’s environmental culture by providing sustainable facilities cleaning and maintenance programs, including UGL Services GreenClean® cleaning program that uses reduced chemicals and advanced equipment. UGL Services also builds on GMC’s energy management, sustainable grounds management, and recycling programs. In addition to campus-wide facilities services, UGL Services is providing staff and management to operate GMC’s combined heat and power (CHP) biomass plant. The plant will reduce GMC’s oil consumption and CO2 equivalent emissions by more than 80 percent while producing 400,000 kWh of electricity per year. The plant has contributed to GMC becoming just the second college in the U.S. to achieve climate neutrality, and the first to accomplish it through efficiency, adoption of clean energy, and purchase of quantifiable local carbon offsets.
