Kaiser Permanente opened its new $500 million medical center in Vallejo, Calif., in March of 2010. Construction began on the five-story, 458,000-sf facility in 2005. The 248-bed hospital meets state seismic regulations and houses an emergency department, radiology, diagnostic imaging, a 24-bed ICU, 10 operating rooms, a rehabilitation center, and surgical suites. The medical center uses wireless connectivity for ease of access to electronic medical records. The sustainably-designed facility features abundant natural light, low-VOC finishes, and a heat recovery system.
