UC Davis Completes Research and Teaching Winery

The University of California, Davis completed construction of the $20 million Research and Teaching Winery and August A. Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory in October of 2010. The 34,000-sf facility is part of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and was built to achieve LEED Platinum sustainable design certification. The Brewing and Food Science Laboratory includes a food processing pilot plant, a dairy processing suite, and a pilot brewery for the Department of Food Science and Technology. The Research and Teaching Winery features an experimental fermentation area, a classroom, a testing laboratory, and a 12.5-acre teaching and research vineyard. The center includes the world’s first fully solar powered wine production facility with all carbon dioxide from fermentation being captured and isolated. The project team included Flad Architects of San Francisco, BNB Norcal of San Mateo, F.M. Booth Mechanical, Red Top Electric, KPW Structural Engineers, Creegan + D'Angelo Civil Engineers, and HLA Landscape Architects.
