AUO's TFT-LCD Facility Attains LEED Gold

Published 3/24/2009

AU Optronics Corp. announced in March of 2009 that its TFT-LCD manufacturing facility located in Central Taiwan Science Park has attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification. The AUO G8.5 Fab is the world's first LEED Gold TFT-LCD facility and one of only four LEED Gold fabs worldwide. The project features a 90 percent water recovery rate, saving 3 million tons of fresh tap water annually, with 90 percent of construction waste being reclaimed. By utilizing highly efficient building systems and extensive tree planting, AUO G8.5 Fab will prevent the emission of 87,000 tons of carbon annually. The facility is part of a company-wide program called ''AUO Green Solutions'' that includes initiatives in procurement, production, logistics, service, recycling, and employee involvement. In addition, as one of its ongoing R&D effort in green products, AUO has led the industry to voluntarily establish an ECO-Label Index for its products in accordance with ISO 14021 standard, aiming to reach carbon balance by 2010. By implementing AUO Green Solutions, AUO achieved an electricity savings amounting to 230 million kwh in Taiwan's operation sites. In addition, by voluntarily installing greenhouse gas abatement devices, 777,000 tons of carbon emission was reduced in total.
