University of Chicago Medical Center Plans $700 Million Expansion

The University of Chicago Medical Center will begin construction in 2009 on a $700 million hospital pavilion in Chicago. Designed by New York architect Rafael Viñoly and Cannon Design of Grand Island, N.Y., the 10-story, 1.2 million-sf hospital pavilion features a flexible design of over 100 modular cubes measuring 31.5 feet wide by 18 feet high for ease of future reconfiguration. The pavilion will include 80 private patient rooms plus 72 intensive care beds and 24 operating rooms. Completion is slated for 2012.
