Published 2/27/2008

Boston University broke ground in late February 2008 on its new facility at Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC). The project, part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Centre, is slated for completion in 2011. The facility will house graduate and postgraduate programs in dentistry and allied health sciences. Boston University’s building is part of the first 4.1 million-sf phase of construction at DHCC which consists of the Academic Medical Centre, day clinics, diagnostic centers, rehabilitation centers, transplantation centers, hospitals, clinics, and a sector for pharmaceutical and equipment suppliers. Facilities are also under construction for the Harvard Medical School Dubai Centre and the 400-bed, 1.4 million-sf University Teaching Hospital (UH) which began construction in June 2007. The hospital will showcase specialty programs in oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, musculoskeletal health, orthopedics, diabetes, metabolic diseases, women's health, and cardiovascular and thoracic services. Additionally, the facility will offer core programs in dermatology, gastroenterology, neonatology, ENT, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, urology, reconstructive surgery, general surgery, and general medicine. UH will incorporate unique features including clinical strength through collaborative care, state-of-the-art healthcare information systems, and the most technologically-advanced complex for kidney and liver transplants. Tentatively, UH will begin patient operations in the first quarter of 2011.
