University of Pennsylvania Designs Behavioral Sciences Building

Published 1/22/2008

The University of Pennsylvania has selected SmithGroup to provide master planning, programming, and schematic design for a new School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Neural and Behavioral Sciences (NBS) Building in Philadelphia. The facility unites the Psychology, Biology, Genomics Institute, and Biological Basis of Behavior departments under one roof, creating synergy in teaching and research. The project will create a new gateway to the campus and constitutes the second and final phase of Penn’s Lynch Life Sciences Building, which when completed will be strategically located in a new complex of research buildings including the Goddard Laboratory, the historic Leidy Laboratory, and Kaskey Park. In addition to housing both research laboratories and teaching facilities, the NBS Building will house interdisciplinary programs and student gathering spaces. SmithGroup services on the project include Lab Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, and Engineering services, and will be a collaboration of SmithGroup’s Detroit and Washington, DC offices. As part of the president of the University’s commitment to sustainability, the project will be evaluated for LEED certification.
