Stanford Medical Center Selects Architects for Palo Alto Expansion

Stanford Medical Center, comprised of Stanford Hospital & Clinics and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, has named architects for the estimated $2 billion seismic upgrade and expansion project in Palo Alto, Calif. Lead architect Rafael Viñoly of New York will work with Burkhart, Liu Inc. of Marina del Rey on the Stanford Hospital project comprising 1.4 million-sf in new construction and including a 600-bed inpatient hospital. The Packard Children’s expansion, consisting of 425,000-sf of new construction and the addition of 104 beds, will be designed by lead architect Kohn Pedersen Fox of New York working with Minneapolis-based Hammel, Green and Abrahamson. The project includes the replacement of the Stanford School of Medicine and is slated to begin construction in 2010. Design development is expected to continue through 2008 with city approval sought in 2009.
